据国外媒体报道，澳大利亚莫纳什大学领导的一项研究，对2000年至2019年间，全球范围内由异常温度导致的死亡率进行了分析。结果发现，全球每年死亡人数的9.43%（超过500万人）都是异常的低温或高温导致的，其中约90%与异常低温有关。不过综合来看，20年间，低温相关的死亡率降低了0.51%，高温导致的死亡率增长了0.21%。该研究发表于《柳叶刀》杂志子刊。
研究者表示，尽管目前异常温度造成的净死亡率有所下降，但随着全球变暖加剧，高温导致的死亡率仍会继续升高，而东欧和撒哈拉以南非洲地区受到的影响最大。
该研究发现，在全球因异常寒冷和高温而死亡的人数中：其中一半以上发生在亚洲，特别是东亚和南亚；欧洲每10万人中因热暴露而造成的额外死亡率最高。
