Business Monday: Embezzlement subpoenas shorten Aspen Highlands vacation

A Brazil-based foundation’s efforts to track down its former president who is suspected of embezzlement led it to a luxury townhome at the base of Aspen Highlands last week. But before the main suspect and his relatives could be served with subpoenas related to foreign legal proceedings, Americo Fialdini Jr. and his family cut their Aspen trip short by a month and left town Feb 1. Those are the claims made by Conrado Wessel Foundation in documents filed last week in Denver federal court. Fialdini Jr., who is the organization’s former president, and his relatives are being sought by the foundation. Foundation court filings allege he embezzled money from the nonprofit to support a lavish lifestyle, which has included annual stays at a townhome located next to the The Ritz-Carlton Club. A criminal investigation into Fialdini Jr. and others also is being conducted by Sao Paolo police.

However, studies conducted by two contractors hired by Pitkin County last spring turned up trace amounts of pollutants. But one of the reports, conducted by Air Resource Specialists (ARS) of Fort Collins, questions whether the pollutants are related to airfield operations, and notes that car traffic on Highway 82 is “likely the dominant local source of emissions near the monitorin

Aspen Airport Holiday Arrivals Down More Than 50%

Alex Hager / Aspen Public Radio The pandemic took a heavy toll on Aspen’s tourism industry during the December holidays, usually the airport’s busiest time of year. In the two-week period around Christmas, the number of arriving passengers at Aspen-Pitkin County airport was down 53% from the year before.  During the same winter holiday period in 2019-2020, the airport recorded 28,000 arrivals. This year, that number was down to about 13,000.  The number of commercial flights was only down by 20%, but arriving aircraft are carrying fewer passengers than normal. “There’s still a lot of flights coming in, but they’re not full,” said Caroline Bonynge, the airport’s director of operations. “In years prior, we were seeing full flights, but now we’re seeing flights with half that capacity coming in.”

By Arina P Habich/Shutterstock.com The project would connect the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport with neighboring public facilities including Holy Cross Energy’s Aspen office, pedestrian snowmelt systems, and the RFTA bus barn.  In addition to increased solar energy capacity and electricity storage, the study is looking into the feasibility of a thermal heat transfer system. The microgrid’s electricity sharing will be incorporated into the existing infrastructure of Holy Cross Energy, an electric cooperative, while new components will be developed for thermal energy distribution between buildings. Currently, there is no estimated total size of the proposed microgrid. However, county officials have indicated that it will likely total multiple megawatts of energy.
