AAHA and AAFP release updated feline life stage guidelines to the veterinary community

E-Mail [LAKEWOOD, CO; BRIDGEWATER, NJ; March 2, 2021] Two of the world s leading veterinary organizations are proud to announce updated recommendations in the 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) convened a Task Force of experts in feline medicine to define distinct feline life stages and provide a framework for individualized healthcare plans. Understanding a cat s life stage and lifestyle greatly impacts healthcare strategies. Veterinary professionals have a responsibility to stress the need for ongoing care for feline patients at every stage of their lives. The updated Guidelines detail the evolution of feline biology and lifestyle over time, requiring different approaches to healthcare for kittens and senior cats.

Creating brighter futures for cats with chronic kidney disease

Cats with chronic kidney disease can now live longer, better lives than ever before. “It’s been a very exciting time over the last decade or so in that we’ve really enhanced our abilities to diagnose and detect chronic kidney disease,” said Dr. Shelly L. Vaden, a professor of internal medicine at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. “We’ve also made many improvements in medical management.” Dr. Vaden was speaking during the New Therapeutic Approaches to Chronic Care Symposium at the AVMA Virtual Convention 2020 this past August. Another convention presentation focused on RenalTech, a new tool from Antech Diagnostics that uses artificial intelligence to predict which cats will develop chronic kidney disease in the next two years.
