Sam Obi, a former speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly and acting governor of the state, is dead, SaharaReporters has learnt.
Obi hails from Ibiegwa quarters, Ute-Okpu community, Ika North-East Local Government Area of the state and represented his constituency from 2007 to 2015.
The ex-acting governor died in his Asaba residence in the early hours of Saturday following an undisclosed ailment he had been battling for some years.

SPEAKER of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has expressed shock and disbelief over the death of former Acting Governor of the State, Rt. Hon. Sam Obi.
Oborevwori in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Dennis Otu, decried the sudden demise of Prince Sam Obi who also a former Speaker of the House, lamenting that he died at a time when his wise counsel was most needed.
Describing the late Sam Obi as a worthy politician and statesman, he said; “the demise of Rt. Hon Sam Obi is not only a loss to his immediate family, the Ute – Okpu community and Owa kingdom but a huge loss to the State as a whole.

VOTER apathy yesterday characterised the council election held across the 25 local government areas of Delta State.
Our correspondents, who monitored the elections across the state report that polling materials arrived late in some the wards during the exercise that was generally peaceful.
At Uzoigwe Primary School in Asaba, materials were yet to arrive as at 9:15 a.m though a handful of voters were on ground with security presence when our correspondent visited.
At Illah and Okpanam in Oshimili North, materials arrived at about 10.20am and distribution of materials to the various units began almost immediately. Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Olisa Ifeajika said the state was calm, expressing hope that the polls would be peaceful.
