East Hartford-based Goodwin University completed a $32 million acquisition of most of the University of Bridgeport s real estate and academic programs.
The U.S. Department of Education, Connecticut office of Higher Education and New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) all approved the deal, under which UB will function as an independent institution with its own leadership and board of trustees under Goodwin s ownership.
“In addition to ensuring that UB’s rich history of higher education would continue in its namesake city for years to come, we wanted to also be sure its leadership reflected UB students and the City of Bridgeport,” Goodwin President Mark Scheinberg said.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. Goodwin University announced on Monday the completion of its acquisition of the University of Bridgeport.

According to a release, the University of Bridgeport will function as an independent institution with its own leadership and Board of Trustees under the ownership and operation of Goodwin University, as approved by the U.S. Department of Education, Connecticut s Office of Higher Education and the New England Commission of Higher Education.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn., May 24, 2021 /PRNewswire/ The future of the University of Bridgeport begins today as Goodwin University announces the completion of its acquisition of the majority of academic programs and real estate comprising the University of Bridgeport (UB). UB will function as an independent institution with its own leadership and Board of Trustees under the ownership and operation of Goodwin University. This change of ownership has received approval from the State of Connecticut Office of Higher Education, as well as institutional and programmatic accreditors including the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE).
Belfast, Maine Through a new partnership, students from midcoast Maine can now earn associate degrees or certificates from the University of Maine at Machias (UMM) at the University of Maine Hutchinson Center in Belfast. Enrollment is now open for programs beginning fall 2021 and scholarships may be available. The UMaine Hutchinson Center will be hosting an online information session from 12:30–1:30 p.m. June 4.
Three UMM associate degree programs are available to students through the Hutchinson Center: an Associate of Arts program in Liberal Studies (AA) with concentrations in allied health, audio/media production, creative writing, mental health and rehabilitation, and psychology, and two Associate of Science programs: business and entrepreneurial studies or conservation law and outdoor management.
