New coronavirus strain detected in India
Fourteen more people in India have been detected with the new coronavirus strain. On Tuesday, the government said that six people who returned from the UK have been detected with coronavirus. So far, India has 20 cases of the new coronavirus strain. Meanwhile, the government has increased scrutiny of passengers from the UK. The mutant coronavirus strain that was first detected in the UK is believed to be 70 per cent more infectious.

The new coronavirus strain, found in the UK first, has 17 mutations in its genetic material. Eight of these mutations affect the spike protein that makes it highly transmittable as compared to the previous mutation. The new Covid-19 strain, dubbed as B.1.1.7, can be 70 per cent more transmissible than the earlier one.

HYDERABAD: Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Director Dr Rakesh Mishra briefed Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu in the city on Thursday, about the new strains of the novel Coronavirus that have been detected in the United Kingdom and South Africa recently.
Dr Mishra apprised the Vice President that the mutations in the new strains are less likely to change the efficacy of the vaccines which are under development. The senior scientist also informed him that there is no evidence which suggests that the strains are associated with worse outcomes for patients. The same disease management strategies are expected to work for the mutant virus strains too.

Not a single new case of coronavirus was detected in Mumbai’s Dharavi area on Friday, for the first time since outbreak of the pandemic.
The Centre will conduct a dry run of the Covid-19 vaccine in Punjab, Assam, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat on December 28 and 29. The dry run is expected to provide insights on any gaps or bottlenecks so that those could be addressed before the commencement of the vaccination drive.

A woman from Andhra Pradesh, who landed at Delhi s IGI airport, set alarm bells ringing after she tested positive for coronavirus and then disappeared from the airport without informing anyone.
The woman came from the UK, where the new variant of coronavirus strain has been detected. It is unclear whether the Andhra woman was tested positive for older or new strain but officials said they cannot afford to take any risk.
