UW-Madison doctoral student Justin Kroll is a cast member of the University Opera production What s Past is Prologue: The Unfinished American Conversation.
University Opera returns with a spring production mixing filmed and staged elements.
Whatâs Past is Prologue examines history while considering current events. Texts by or about U.S. figures â Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglass, Langston Hughes, Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain and Walt Whitman â are set to songs or song cycles by composers Christopher Berg, Margaret Bonds, Tom Cipullo, Michael Daugherty, Scott Gendel, Jennifer Higdon, John Kander, Steven Mark Kohn, Ned Rorem and Gwyneth Walker. Accompanying panel discussions examine how the legacy of hierarchical structures in the arts is changing, and the intersection of cancel culture and Susan B. Anthony s views on race

Following a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Millikin University School of Music’s annual Hollis Prize competition will return in a virtual format with two livestream broadcasts.
The competition will be held on Saturday, April 10, at 7:30 p.m. and the Winner’s Recital will be held on Sunday, April 18, at 2 p.m. Both events will be livestreamed on the Millikin University School of Music YouTube page.
The Hollis Prize, the highest award that may be received by a student instrumentalist or vocalist within the Millikin School of Music, was first awarded during spring 2003. This year’s finalists are Max DiPasquale (saxophone), a junior music education-instrumental major from Belleville, Ill.; Bradley Perry (trombone), a senior vocal performance major from Peoria, Ill.; and Austin Shaw (piano), a senior piano performance major from Washington, Ill.

On Tuesday from 11 am to noon, the WSU School of Music and Allegro will be hosting World Music Fall Convocation, featuring Kozue Matsumoto.
Matsumoto, who performs Japanese Koto Music, is from the Tohoku area in Japan and is now based in the Los Angeles area. She has played the koto since she was three years old under Ikuta-ryu Miyagi-kai and holds a semi-master title. She has also played the shamisen and the shinobue since she was very young.
