Starlink s $70 Million Bet For Survival Moves Forward As FCC Issues New Proposal

Jan 16, 2021 12:11 EST Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) and other non-geostationary fixed-satellite services (NGSO FSS) providers fight with multi-channel video data distribution service (MVDDS) providers has progressed forward as the commissioners of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has sought comments for spectrum sharing rules related to the 12.2 - 12.7 GHz wireless spectrum. The proposal follows a five-year-old petition by the MVDDS providers that asked the FCC to remove privileges offered to the satellite internet companies. This was based on the fact that no company had yet set up equipment to use this spectrum for satellite internet services. In comments made to the FCC prior to last week s NPRM, SpaceX had argued that the 1000MHz of spectrum preceding 12.7GHz was optimal for establishing a satellite downlink to Starlink user terminals, which are a $70 million investment for the company.
