Prague becomes headquarters of EU space programme agency

Prague has become the headquarters for the European Union Agency for Space Programme (EUSPA). It takes the place and expands on the work of the former satellite navigation agency GSA, which had been based in the Czech capital since 2012. The EUSPA will play a key role in implementing the EU’s space programme, said the new agency’s director, Rodrigo da Costa. It is currently the only EU agency based in the Czech Republic. Its expansion is expected to create around 400 new jobs.

EU Space on a new trajectory with launch of EUSPA

The European Union Agency for the Space Programme, EUSPA, is launched today marking the start of a new era for EU Space. Building on the legacy of the European GNSS Agency, EUSPA will take on more responsibilities to create even more opportunities from Space for EU citizens and its economy. The adoption of the Regulation establishing the new EU Space Programme on April 27 marks a new beginning for the EU Space Programme and for the European GNSS Agency (GSA), which has now officially evolved into EUSPA, with an expanded mandate and new responsibilities. What has changed? Under the new Space Regulation, EUSPA’s mandate will now include increased responsibilities in managing the exploitation of Galileo and EGNOS, including their service provision and operational security. Furthermore, the Agency’s new remit includes coordinating the user-related aspects of GOVSATCOM in close collaboration with the Member States and other involved entities.

A new space agency launched in Europe this week. Called the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA), it is the successor to the European GNSS Agency (GSA), which was established in 2004. EUSPA presents the first-ever integrated EU space programme and, according to officials, will create even more opportunities for EU citizens and the economy and help develop the EU’s role in space.

Increased Rail Role Urged for Galileo and EGNOS; GNSS Important for Europe s Green New Deal and Mobility Makeover

“Trains were born in Europe,” opens a recent report on European energy policy from the Jacques Delors Institute in Paris. So also, in some senses, were the Green movement and increased awareness of personal mobility options and potential. For the continent and the European Union community to maintain their world leadership in these two areas, the rail sector must play a greater role than it does presently, argues report author Matthias Ruete. He sees Galileo and EGNOS, the two European GNSS, as essential to this strategy. “This European Year of the Railways should be an opportunity to make rail transport the major player in clean European mobility, even though its overall share of the various modes of transport has become relatively low,” states the report, Challenges for European Rail: Getting Solutions on Track.
