THUNDER BAY A cohort at St. Bernard Elementary School has been sent home after two individuals at the school tested positive for COVID-19.
The Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board, in a release issued on Thursday night, said the cohort was sent home earlier in the day and should expect to be contacted by a public health nurse. The River Street school is being thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
The identity of those who test positive is not being released, the board citing privacy concerns.
Shortly after students in northern Ontario returned to physical classrooms following their winter break, a surprise came from the provincial government.
Peacefully at his home on Friday, December 18th, Thomas George Mustapic, age 61 passed away in the arms of his loving family after a difficult battle with ALS. Tom was born in Port Arthur to Ruth and George and attended Vance Chapman and Lakeview High School. He graduated from Lakehead University in 1982 and obtained his Chartered Professional Accountant designation. He worked at The City of Thunder Bay and Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board, retiring in 2014. Tom was a valued member of the Board’s senior leadership team and was proud of his contributions to Catholic education in Thunder Bay.
Tom was a true gentleman and was admired and respected by all who met him. He was a mentor to many and a friend to all. He was a wonderful husband and father and always put his family first. Students advised to take home learning materials ‘as a precaution’
The Ministry of Education sent a memo to school boards across Ontario advising students and staff to take home all learning materials needed for online learning to be ready for ‘all scenarios’ in January

THUNDER BAY - Students in schools across Ontario, including Thunder Bay, are being advised to take home any learning materials before the winter break as a precaution in the event of switching to online learning in January.
On Thursday, the Ministry of Education sent out a memo to school boards in the province, “recommending that boards encourage students and staff to take home any materials that they may require for remote learning before they leave school for the holiday period so that we can continue to be ready for all scenarios.”
