Thunder Bay vaccinations up 56 4% this week

Doctor hand wearing medical gloves in close up view hold a vaccine bottle vial while transferring medication to an injection syringe used for treatment of Covid-19 patients THUNDER BAY Vaccination rates are back on track in the District of Thunder Bay, after a two-week dip to allow vaccines to be diverted to southern Ontario hot spots.  The Thunder Bay District Health Unit on Tuesday announced it gave out a total of 9,001 vaccines for the week ending on May 15, 7,156 of them as first doses.  As of Saturday, 74,143 residents have received at least one dose, representing 54 per cent of the 16-and-older population in the district and 45.6 per cent of the overall population. 

COVID-19 cases in the Thunder Bay district fall below 30

iStock THUNDER BAY  The number of active COVID-19 cases in the District of Thunder Bay has fallen below 30, matching the caseload s lowest point since November 14. The current figure of 29 was also reached on May 11, 2021. The Thunder Bay District Health Unit on Monday reported three new COVID-19 cases, and the resolution of six previous cases. Among the new cases, two are the result of close contact with infected individuals, while the other has no known exposure source. Two cases are in the immediate Thunder Bay area, and the third is in a First Nation community.

Active case count lowest since mid-November

iStock THUNDER BAY – The District of Thunder Bay has dropped to its lowest active case count in nearly six months.   The Thunder Bay District Health Unit on Tuesday announced six new cases, with 10 previously diagnosed cases being resolved. That leaves Thunder Bay with 44 active cases, the lowest it’s been since Nov. 16, when there were 41. The health unit also announced another case considered a variant of concern, bringing the total number of cases to 41. There have been 3,119 COVID-19 cases in the district since the pandemic began, with 62 deaths related to the virus. The region’s seven-day, per-100,000 case count remains at 28.68 for the second straight day.

Surgical mask protective masiStock THUNDER BAY – An COVID-19 outbreak that spread rapidly through the area’s homeless and precariously housed community has been declared to be over. The Thunder Bay District Health Unit on Thursday said it took a collaborative and sustained effort by a number of community organizations, targeted vaccinations and enhanced prevention and control measures to get the outbreak under control. Outbreaks were declared in January at both the Thunder Bay District Jail and the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre, which helped fuel the spread in the homeless community.
