The Northwestern Health Unit and local partners are preparing to launch regional COVID-19 vaccine clinics.
As the vaccine supply starts to increase, the health unit expects to start appointment-based clinics for residents over 80 years old in early April.
“About 40 percent of local health units were started later with getting their vaccines and so we’re one of them,” explains Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kit Young Hoon. “The reasons were because they prioritized other areas with higher incidence rates, so the Thunder Bay District Health Unit has had a higher incidence rate for a long period of time.”
The 48 positive test results were announced on Friday morning, which amounts to a combined two-day total of more than 100 cases for the first time when combined with Thursday's announcement.

As COVID-19 numbers decline in the region, cases in Thunder Bay continue to rise, risking the spread of the virus. Dr. Kit Young Hoon, medical officer of health at the Northwestern Health Unit (NWHU), said they are monitoring the situation closely and looking at ways to keep the homeless population in the NWHU catchment area safe.
“There are things such as case and contact management, reaching out to that population, making sure they’re supported whether they need masks, education or information,” Young Hoon said. “Vaccinations could be part of ensuring the spread of COVID-19 does not occur in a very vulnerable population.
