Rules for special events relaxed in response to new COVID guidelines By FOX 7 Austin Digital Team Published  AUSTIN, Texas - The Austin Center for Events (ACE) says it s revising the Bringing Events Back: Event Reopening Guide and the COVID-19 Health and Safety Form currently required for special events applications. Revisions to the guide and application process will take effect next week. Officials say applicants can anticipate changes to the social distancing requirements and masking requirements to incorporate the latest guidelines.  Providing proof of vaccine for patrons will not be a requirement for event applicants, officials say. Any pre-admission proof of vaccine protocols will be up to event organizers to determine.

City of Austin announces new Medical Director/Health Authority

  Medical Director/Health Authority   The City of Austin has identified Desmar Walkes, M.D. as the City’s next Medical Director/Health Authority. Dr. Walkes will begin her new duties on May 31, 2021. Dr. Walkes has 33 years of experience in health care as a family practitioner, medical authority, medical director, and in administrative medicine. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with honors from Acadia University in Nova Scotia, Canada and her Medical Doctor degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. Dr. Walkes completed a surgical internship at Baylor College of Medicine and, for many years, has participated in medical mission trips to Central and South America, Asia, and Africa.

Austin s biggest vaccination hub seeing a drop in demand for COVID-19 shots Bettie Cross © Provided by KEYE Austin Austin Public Health (APH) is temporarily stopping the administration of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine at Travis County’s largest vaccination hub. “Austin Public Health has paused administration of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine pending the revue from the FDA,” said Dr. Mark Escott, Interim Health Authority at Austin Public Health. APH typically gets 12,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine each week. Recently, it also started getting 1,000 dose shipments of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. “Luckily, the majority of the vaccine that Austin Public Health receives and administers is Moderna. So, we have a very small number of doses that we’ve given of Johnson & Johnson and that we have of Johnson & Johnson,” said Dr. Escott.
