Federal judge rules Michigan university discriminated against Christian group

Federal judge rules Michigan university discriminated against Christian group Print this article A federal judge has ruled that a Michigan school discriminated against a Christian campus group that requires its leaders to be Christians. Judge Robert Cleland found that Wayne State University, a state school in Detroit, treated the campus s chapter of the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship unfairly when it suspended the group in 2017 for mandating that leaders must profess Christianity. The school had justified its action as an enforcement of its nondiscrimination policy. But Cleland wrote that it had violated the First Amendment s establishment clause, as well as InterVarsity s rights to internal management, free speech, freedom of association, freedom of assembly, and free exercise.

However, religious groups were not allowed to require that leaders share any of a group s religious beliefs, and at Wayne State, it was a small group of Christians, who were denied student organization benefits because they require their Christian leaders to be.Christian.

University officials will be held liable for discriminating against the club. InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, a student ministry that provides community, Bible studies and important discussions on campus, has been a part of Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan for over 75 years. Though the club is open to all students, the university deemed InterVarsity’s leadership policies “discriminatory” for requiring that the group’s leaders agree with the organization’s statement of faith.
