AT&T Joins With Discovery to Create New Media Titan

AT&T s Big Deal With Discovery Unwinds Billions in Mergers

AT&T is unwinding its biggest deal AT&T just announced that it will combine its WarnerMedia division the home of HBO and CNN, built from its $85 billion takeover of Time Warner in 2016 with Discovery, which runs channels like HGTV and the Food Network. The announcement is a stark sign that the aggressive dealmaking that transformed AT&T into a debt-heavy conglomerate hasn’t paid off. Offloading WarnerMedia would cap a reversal of deals worth hundreds of billions of dollars. Under Randall Stephenson, AT&T bought a slew of companies, including Time Warner and DirecTV, in the hopes of marrying an enormous content-creation machine with a broadband and satellite TV powerhouse. Those bets haven’t worked out, which led AT&T to sell a stake in DirecTV to TPG and its Crunchyroll streaming service to Sony earlier this year.

Stocks Dip Monday as Tech Leads Wall Street Slightly Lower

Original: May 17, 2021 Stocks fell Monday as Wall Street came off a rough week driven by concerns over what effect rising inflation would have on the U.S. recovery. A spike in COVID-19 cases, particularly in Thailand and Taiwan, dented sentiment. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 145 points, or 0.42%, to 34,237, the S&P 500 declined 0.5% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq was down 0.73%. Stocks in the energy sector were Monday s best performer. After a bullish start to the month, it seems as though the bears gained the upper hand for most of last week as signs of inflation - real or perceived - rattled the market, said Chris Larkin, managing director of trading and investing product at E Trade. While tech is no doubt feeling some extra heat from inflation jitters, it’s a little early to start throwing around the wreck word.
