J.R. Ankenbruck, Lincoln Elementary Principal
John R. (J.R.) Ankenbruck joined FWCS in 2003 as a Title I resource teacher at Geyer Middle School after beginning his career in Indianapolis. In 2004, he moved to Kekionga Middle School as a social studies teacher, and in 2006, he served as an administrative intern at Miami Middle School followed by positions as assistant principal at Franke Park Elementary and then Croninger Elementary. He became principal of Washington Elementary in 2010, and in 2014, he moved to principal at Holland Elementary. At Lincoln, he replaces Claire Paul, who is moving to Whitney Young Early Childhood Center.

Purdue’s largest freshman class will include first graduates of Purdue Polytechnic High School in Indianapolis

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The pipeline of qualified students flowing from Indianapolis to West Lafayette is now open. Purdue’s latest enrollment data shows that the university is reaching students and families in the state’s capital as never before.
Forty students from the first graduating class of Purdue Polytechnic High School Schweitzer Center at Englewood in Indianapolis are among the more than 10,000 incoming freshmen expected to arrive on campus later this summer as part of the university’s largest freshman class ever. In addition to PPHS Schweitzer Center located on Indianapolis’ east side, there is the North campus near Indianapolis’ Broad Ripple neighborhood and PPHS South Bend.

In a typical year, Indianapolis school counselor Karen Matthews spends lunch breaks bribing high school seniors with free baked potatoes or nachos to come to her office and fill out college financial aid forms.
Matthews, who works at Beech Grove High School, said these “working lunches” have been her most successful tactic for encouraging completion of the federal aid application, which intimidates many of her students. The form requires answering over 100 questions and providing multiple records, including Social Security numbers, tax returns, and records of untaxed income.
“If we can just get them started, they realize it’s not that bad and they’ll usually finish it,” Matthews said.
