Indianapolis Public Schools mask rules: Masks required for all

Indianapolis Public Schools will require masks for all students, teachers and staff when classes start Monday.  The district announced the change from its previous policy, which allowed fully vaccinated individuals to opt out of the district s mask requirement with proof of their vaccination status, on social media Thursday afternoon.  IPS, the state s largest district, is the latest to change its mask policy following new guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. On Tuesday, the CDC issued recommendations that all students, teachers and staff members in K-12 schools wear masks, regardless of vaccination status.  Just weeks earlier, the CDC had said that fully vaccinated individuals no longer needed to mask indoors. The change came in response to a surge of new COVID-19 cases, fueled by low vaccination uptake and the more contagious delta variant of the virus.

Delta variant: Indiana health emergency renewed again

View Comments Gov. Eric Holcomb extended the COVID-19 public health emergency in Indiana and urged Hoosiers to get vaccinated as the delta variant drives new coronavirus cases. The more contagious delta variant made up 86.7% of positive COVID-19 tests in Indiana this month alone. With roughly 57% of the state not fully vaccinated health experts predict a spike in COVID-19 infections. Showing concern over the variant, Thursday s executive orders said Hoosiers are “strongly encouraged” to get vaccinated. “All Hoosiers and each and every person within the Hoosier state should take responsibility for their safety and the health and safety of those around them by taking appropriate preventative measures,” one of the two new executive orders states. “This is particularly important due to the high transmissibility of the Delta variant of COVID-19.”
