at least 20 of his cousins.
Bognet graduated in 1997 and went on to a career in business and politics, as he ran for a seat in Congress this past fall. He is now one of six candidates running for three available alumni-elected positions on Penn State’s Board of Trustees.
To learn more about his campaign, Onward State sat down with Bognet to discuss his bid and the upcoming election.
Attending football games since he was 3 years old and making frequent visits back to Happy Valley, Bognet is certainly a lifelong Nittany Lion. He said his relationship with the university makes him a worthy candidate.
Penn State students and community members work tirelessly to enhance the lives of children and families impacted by childhood cancer through THON. But Penn State’s local connection with pediatric cancer runs even deeper through an initiative called the Jared Box Project.
The Jared Box Project was started locally in 2001 in memory and honor of Jared McMullen, a 5-year-old boy who was diagnosed with an incurable brainstem tumor in 1999.
“Jared always took a backpack filled with toys [to the hospital],” Jared Box Project Executive Director Cindy Kolarik said. “Jared actually noticed other kids that looked bored or sad or lonely, and he shared his toys with them. That always stuck in the back of my mind. Even though he was going through all that, he was able to look around and care for others.”
The initiative, led by an anonymous student group called “Dark Paw,” specifically asks Penn State to let seniors into Beaver Stadium for the final spring football practice. Currently, only freshmen are permitted to attend.
“The decision makes zero sense,” Dark Paw’s
website reads. “Freshmen will have 3 full seasons and 3 Blue & White games left to experience Penn State Football. Seniors, though? This is our last chance to ever experience a football game as students. The decision was simply disrespectful to Penn State’s most loyal fans who have religiously purchased season tickets for years.”
Dark Paw’s campaign essentially sends emails to Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Sandy Barbour and an unclear number of Penn State football’s “top donors.” Its website said each message intends to let recipients know seniors are “getting totally shafted.”

Whether you like it or not, it’s time for a new era of Penn State hoops, folks.
As head coach Micah Shrewsberry gets set to lead the Nittany Lions, a few stars have reportedly entered the NCAA transfer portal and Penn State is
still without any official recruits. Although Izaiah Brockington
elected to stay in Happy Valley and Jamari Wheeler is
headed to Ohio State, Shrewsberry’s got some work to do to flesh out his roster.
