Attempted murder charged in Fourmile assault

Buena Vista police received a report of gunshots and a man threatening to kill another individual near CR 304 in the Midland Hill Trail area Thursday afternoon, resulting in a suspect being charged with attempted first degree murder. According to a press release from Chaffee County Sheriff John Spezze, responding officers found the victim, who had been shooting target practice, with injuries to his head and face. The victim said that the suspect, Thomas Labosky, 35, had inflicted the unprovoked injuries with a rock and a stick. The victim was also forced to remove all his clothing. Spezze said he could not comment as to Labosky s state of mind, but did say that the attack was unprovoked and there were underlying issues.

Cathy Amenta

Cathy Jean Amenta (née Cox) of Salida passed peacefully at home May 17. She fought a very long and valiant battle against Ovarian cancer. Her ever cheerful strength and courage were inspiring gifts that she gave selflessly to her friends and family. Cathy was a very well-loved and respected member of the Salida community. She owned and operated Amenta Massage and Bodyworks in downtown Salida and later she devoted her time and talents to the Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center where she gave therapeutic massage to the oncology patients receiving treatment there. Cathy was born Feb. 4, 1967, in Englewood and was raised in Littleton. After the family moved to Bailey, she graduated from Platte Canyon High School where she excelled in track and field and won the state championship for the 100-meter hurdle.

Academic Booster Club announces scholarship winners

Shavano Academic Booster Club recently announced its scholarship winners for 2021. Scholarship applications follow specific criteria, including: leadership potential, community involvement, motivation, work ethics and the written presentation of an application essay.  The organization provided five scholarships this year to the following students: $1,500 scholarships

Solvista Health breaks ground

A new regional option for mental health care in the rural central mountain region was one step closer to reality as ground was broken Thursday for Solvista Health’s Regional Assessment Center on the Heart of Rockies Regional Medical Center campus. When completed the facility will provide: • 24/7 crisis services •Withdrawal management – a safe supervised treatment space to withdraw from alcohol and drugs. • Respite care – a place to comfortably and safely have a break from a difficult situation. • Acute treatment – intensive short-term treatment options for severe mental health or substance use issues. • Individual and group counseling, psychiatry, case management, peer support services and more.
