Reversing prediabetes linked to fewer heart attacks, strokes

People who reverse their prediabetes may lower the risk of heart attack, stroke and death, a new study suggests. With prediabetes, a person has blood sugar levels that are higher than normal but lower than the threshold for a diabetes diagnosis. Even so, people with prediabetes are more likely to have a heart attack or stroke, studies have found. Prediabetes can be reversed, and smaller studies suggest doing so lowers the risk of developing heart disease. But the authors of the new work, published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Heart Association, said little research has explored whether reversing prediabetes offers protection.

Leading cardiovascular organizations call for urgent action to reduce air pollution

E-Mail Air pollution is a key risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and a major contributor to the global burden of disease. Long-term exposure to air pollution has also been linked to an increased risk of death from COVID-19. This dangerous triple threat of air pollution, COVID-19 and cardiovascular disease should be taken seriously, warn major health authorities. Four leading cardiovascular organizations - the World Heart Federation (WHF), American College of Cardiology (ACC), American Heart Association (AHA) and European Society of Cardiology (ESC) - today released a joint statement urging the medical community and health authorities to mitigate the impact of air pollution on people s health.

A Push for an Exercise Component in Stroke Rehab

There were no safety events related to exercise among the study cohort. Despite similar cardiovascular risk factors to traditional CR [cardiac rehabilitation] participants and potential health benefits from participation, stroke is not among the covered diagnoses for CR services in the United States. Findings support the use of CR exercise programs for survivors of stroke after rehabilitation to improve endurance, health status, and quality of life, Regan s group concluded. Patients often engage in physical therapy immediately after stroke but then become less fit during the transition from one-on-one care with a physical therapist to a self-directed exercise routine, they noted.
