5. Autumn Sonata (1978)
Few films portray mother-daughter relationships as succinctly and realistically as Autumn Sonata. Bergman was the authority in portraying dysfunctional-families on screen. Many of his most famous films like Cries & Whispers, Fanny and Alexander, and Scenes from a Marriage are among the truest depictions of family life put on film. In a way, many of his films are the opposite of melodramatic.
But it is possible for a film to be both jarringly real and melodramatic. It is rare and difficult for a film to achieve this, but Autumn Sonata does. It is the story of a mother’s visit to her daughter’s home after years of absence. Liv Ullmann plays the daughter, Ingrid Bergman plays her mother. The different layers of emotional trauma and neglect in their relationship get progressively revealed through conversations between them.

San Sebastian’s Tabakalera, a former tobacco factory repurposed as a hub of cultural activity for the Basque region with close ties to the city’s film festival, has launched the 2deo Serieak, an ambitious, international program developed to tutor, guide and support projects from TV series creators, producers and scriptwriters. The new initiative is backed by 2deo, Tabakalera’s audiovisual laboratory, and promoted by the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa in collaboration with the San Sebastian Festival.
For the Tabakalera, the program represents a further step forward in the promotion and dissemination of Spanish, and more specifically Basque culture and talent, perhaps best exemplified by the recent global success of HBO Europe’s “Patria,” the company’s first Spanish-language original which can now be seen HBO Max.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences doesn t even begin its Oscar nomination voting period until March 5 (the Oscar nominees will be announced on March 15), and a lot can still happen between now and then. Additionally, there are major differences in terms of composition and inclination between the groups that determine the noms for the Golden Globes, SAG Awards and Oscars.
Golden Globe nominations are decided by roughly 90 Los Angeles-based journalists for foreign media outlets; SAG noms are determined by approximately 2,500 randomly selected U.S.-based members of SAG-AFTRA, the world s largest union of actors; and acting Oscar noms reflect the tastes of 1,363 (by last count) of members of the actors branch of the Academy, an organization comprised of people based all around the world.
