Northland farmers query proposed rate hike of 30 per cent: How is this fair?

DENISE PIPER/STUFF Farmers are concerned about Far North District Council s proposed changes to rates, which will see rural rates increase 30 per cent in a year. Far North farmers are questioning a plan to increase their rates as much as 37 per cent in one year, saying they are unfairly being seen as a cash cow. But Far North Mayor John Carter said the changes are not set in stone, and councillors will decide on the rating system once they have considered all submissions. The proposals are part of the Far North District Council’s Long Term Plan 2021-31 consultation. An overall rates increase of 5.5 per cent is proposed.
