Italy PM Conte wins crucial Senate vote to stay in power-530819

Italy PM Conte wins crucial Senate vote to stay in power BBC 20th January, 2021 10:40:18 Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has won a crucial vote to stay in power - days after former PM Matteo Renzi pulled his party out of the coalition. The vote in the Senate - 156-140, with 16 abstentions - means, however, that Mr Conte does not have an absolute majority in the upper chamber. Opposition parties say they plan to ask President Sergio Mattarella to intervene to force him to resign. Mr Conte, a law professor, has led a centrist coalition since 2018. The main parties in his coalition are the anti-establishment Five Star (M5S) and the centre-left Democratic Party (PD).

The government was left on the verge of collapse after ex-premier Matteo Renzi withdrew his small Italia Viva party from the ruling coalition.  His move last week has opened up a period of political turmoil as the Covid-19 death toll mounts and Italy must come up with a credible plan to spend 220 billion euros ($266 billion) in EU recovery funds.

Dutch government falls as deaths mount in COVID-19 pandemic On January 15, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced his government’s resignation ahead of national elections scheduled for March 17. He will head a caretaker government until then. Rutte claimed that his resignation aimed to redress the wrong committed in a 2013-2019 welfare scandal, where the Dutch state falsely accused 26,000 parents of dual-national families of welfare fraud, improperly forcing them to pay back tens of thousands of euros in child benefit. “With this decision, the government wants to do justice to all those parents who have been unprecedentedly wronged,” Rutte said. “The rule of law should protect citizens from the all-powerful government, and that has gone horribly wrong here.”
