The heated canvassing in the closely watched Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) election campaign wrapped up on Friday with the penultimate round of the election process – voting – just hours away.
Deemed as the consequential moment for the state, the polling would take place amid ramped-up security.
More than 700 candidates from 32 political and religious parties are contesting for the 45 general seats.
Out of the rest eight reserved seats, five are for women and three seats, one each for religious scholars, technocrats, and overseas Kashmiris. The members for these seats are nominated after the elections.

Pakistan has categorically rejected the baseless and irresponsible remarks made by Indian State Minister for External Affairs in the Parliament regarding the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, situation in Afghanistan and China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Foreign Office Spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri said India cannot divert attention from its illegal occupation and human rights violations in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJ&K) with fabricated claims.
He said Jammu and Kashmir remains an internationally recognized dispute, pending resolution in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions and the wishes of the people of Kashmir.

Pakistan has categorically rejected “baseless and irresponsible” remarks made by Indian state minister for external affairs in the Indian Parliament regarding the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, situation in Afghanistan and the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
“Regurgitation of false and fabricated claims by India can neither change the facts nor divert attention from India’s illegal occupation and human rights violations in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK),” Foreign Office spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri said on Saturday.

Vote counting is under way and unofficial results started to pour in after polling for 45 general seats in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) concluded at 5pm on Sunday. However, reports of violent brawls started coming out a little over an hour after the polling process began in the morning.
