At least 20 cases in Maharashtra state have been found linked to the new Delta Plus variant that India designated a variant of concern on Tuesday, according to the health ministry.
While it is not known where the variant originated, Public Health England first reported on Delta Plus in a June 11 bulletin, calling it a sub-lineage of the Delta variant first detected in India last year.

KURNOOL: A sudden increase in deaths registered in May at the Kurnool Municipal Corporation (KMC) has confirmed the fears about the Covid-19’s devastating effect on the lives here. The number of deaths outnumbered the number of births registered during the month.
KMC data, shared with Deccan Chronicle, showed May alone recorded 1,139 deaths, the highest in the past 14 months. During the month, there were 1078 births.

Addressing a press conference, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Director General (DG) Dr Balram Bhargava said that the Serum Institute of India s Covishield and indigenously developed Covaxin works against variants of SARS-CoV-2 like Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta.
Also, he informed that in a first-ever study, India would come up with its findings on how effective the vaccines are against Delta Plus.
Delta Plus has recently been cultured, and it is being examined whether the vaccines are effective against this variant. The report will be available in 7 to 10 days.
