Maharashtra mills end sugarcane crushing season; uncertainty about the next season May 28, 2021 Mills are finding it challenging to raise adequate funds This sugar season, 190 sugar mills in Maharashtra participated in the crushing season compared to 144 sugar mills in the 2019-20 season. However, sugar industry players are not sure if many mills will be able to operate next season owing to crumbling finances. Maharashtra sugar mills finally ended the current crushing season with the Sugar Commissioner of Maharashtra announcing the final data on sugarcane crushing this season on Friday. Mills in the State produced 106.3 lakh tonne of sugar after crushing 1,012 lakh tonne of cane with a sugar recovery of 10.50 per cent according to the data published by the Sugar Commissioner office. About 70 Maharashtra sugar mills gear up for oxygen manufacturing May 04, 2021 15 mills have placed orders for skid-mounted oxygen manufacturing units To meet the rising demand for medical oxygen to treat Covid-19 patients, about 70 sugar mills in Maharashtra are gearing up for manufacturing oxygen. “This is a timely step taken by mills in Maharashtra. About 25 mills are already in the process to set up oxygen plants and we are focusing on about 60-70 sugar mills that have financially performed very well. Majority of these mills are in rural areas and the demand for oxygen here could be met by sugar mills,” said Prakash Naiknavare, MD, National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCSF).

Sugar output rises by 41 lakh tonnes: ISMA

8-10 lakh tonnes exports likely in May Sugar mills have produced 299.2 lakh tonnes of sugar between October 1, 2020 and April 30, 2021. This is 41 lakh tonnes higher than 258.1 lakh tonnes produced during the same period last sugar season, according to the Indian Sugar Mills’ Association (ISMA). Compared with the 112 sugar mills crushing sugarcane as on April 30 last year, 106 mills were involved as on April 30 this year. To support exports, the government had allowed the swap between MAEQ (Maximum Admissable Export Quantity) and domestic sales quota for the current sugar season (October 2020 to September 2021). This move had received a positive response from the millers. As per market reports, contracts for exports of about 55 lakh tonne had been entered into so far.
