Sugar mills in the country produced 176.83 lakh tonnes (lt) of sugar till January 31, around 25 per cent more than 141 lt produced in the corresponding period last season, said the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) on Tuesday.
As many as 491 mills are in operation currently as compared with 447 in the same period last year. India’s sugar season is from October to September next year.
Mills in Maharashtra produced 63.8 lt of sugar as against 34.64 lt last year and sugar production in Uttar Pradesh was at 54.43 lt, similar to the last year’s 54.96 lt. In Maharashtra, 182 mills are currently crushing sugarcane while 120 mills are in operation in UP, it said.

Budget’s focus on renewables and clean air will aid in ethanol production Sugar industry stands to benefit from the Budget proposal to increase import duty on denatured ethyl alcohol to 5 per cent from the current 2.5 per cent as it would make imported ethyl alcohol costlier by ₹1 per litre at the current global prices, the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) said on Tuesday.
This, in turn, will increase the demand for domestic molasses and alcohol , the sugar industry body said responding to the budgetary proposal.
In 2019-20, India imported 50 crore litres of denatured ethyl alcohol, which is used mainly in chemical industry, according to data available with the Commerce Ministry. During April-November period of 2020-21, India imported a little over 40 crore litres of the denatured ethyl alcohol, indicating a higher demand.

A shortage of shipping containers in India, the world’s second-biggest sugar producer, is hurting shipments even as overseas demand stays robust, according to an industry official.
The nation has exported only 70,000 tons of white sugar in containers this month, compared with about 370,000 tons in January 2020, said Ravi Gupta, president of Shree Renuka Sugars Ltd, the country’s top refiner.
Shipping rates have risen globally as demand for goods rebounded more strongly than expected in the second half of 2020, creating a container shortage. Geopolitical tensions with China have also reined in imports into India, meaning fewer incoming containers.
