VERO BEACH, Fla. â All lanes of US 1 are shut down at 65th Street in Vero Beach following a deadly crash, according to the Indian River County Sheriff s Office.
The crash involving a black Honda and a red Kia occurred shortly before 10 p.m., officials said.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a female passenger in the Kia was flown to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
The drivers of each vehicle were transported to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center and Cleveland Clinic hospitals. The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time.
The Indian River County Sheriff s Office is investigating the case as a crime.
A passerby on April 9 called in the location to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, which responded to the rural dirt road alongside a canal and rescued the animals.
They were transported to the Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County shelter, 6230 77th St., for care.
“They were in bad shape,” said Executive Director Kate Meghji. “They were lethargic, dehydrated and terrified when they were found without any food or water.
Several key shelter staff stayed with the animals throughout the night to make sure they received medical attention, and food and water was provided to all of the animals as quickly as possible, she said.
After 26 dogs and puppies were stuffed into a single crate and abandoned without food or water along a dirt road, a reward of $4,500 is being offered to help catch the suspect or suspects.
