AMARAVATI: Reports of various research institutions indicate food contamination, while ruling out water or air pollution, as the possible cause for the ‘mystery’ disease in Eluru that has left over 600 people hospitalised since December 6.
While the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) found mercury residues in rice and pesticides on tomatoes, the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology suspected that pesticides may have triggered the acute symptoms.
All research bodies said they need more time to zero in on the exact cause. How lead and nickel, which were not present in water, entered the human body remained a puzzle. They said that they have also found abnormal level of organo phosphorus in the blood samples of the victims. NIN scientists said that high usage of pesticides in the region might have been the reason for the illness.
