Like remoras to a whale, narratives cling to every state. They persist long after they stop being true. Punjab is the state of cancer, drugs and the Green Revolution. Tamil Nadu has excellent public delivery of healthcare and education. In Bihar, Nitish Kumar is Sushasan, Good Governance, Babu even though the State remains absent.
This void does not stay empty for long. Society steps in, creating imperfect replacements to the State.

Fibre optics – say the words and people think of high-speed internet cables. More knowledgeable ones might also know it is the science of transmitting light through flexible fibre. But very few would even have an inkling that the man who coined the term “fibre optics” was born and educated in India.
Fewer still realise that the contributions of Narinder Singh Kapany find application in the lives of billions of people on this planet, in ways big and small.
Kapany died in the US last month, a trailblazer in the field of fibre optics, a role model for optical engineers but an unsung hero, unknown to so many whose lives he touched with his innovations.

Panaji, Jan 18 : Following the relocation of the IIT-Goa campus amid protests, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Monday announced that his government may soon appoint a committee to identify a new site for setting up of a campus for the elite technology institute.
Speaking to reporters in Margao town, located 35 km from Panaji, Sawant also said the committee would also contain officials from the Indian Institute of Technology and potential new sites would be discussed thoroughly to prevent any faux pas, like the one which occurred in Melaulim village in Sattari sub district.

The IIT project in Goa has been opposed by the Shel- Melaulim village residents, who are not willing to part with their land for the campus.

PANAJI: Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Monday said his government will set up a four-member committee to decide a new location for the construction of the proposed IIT campus in the state, following opposition from locals to the previous site.
Bowing to public pressure, the Goa government last week announced that the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campus, which was proposed to set up at Shel-Melaulim village in Sattari taluka of North Goa district, will be shifted to another part of the coastal state.
