The East Central Ohio Educational Service Center presented the Overcoming Obstacles Awards and the Excellence in Community Inclusion Award at Dover High School’s Auditorium on April 22.
The Overcoming Obstacles Awards started in 2015. They are presented to one student from each school district in Tuscarawas County for their dedication and perseverance in overcoming obstacles to achieve success in school. This year’s award winners were Marcus Angle from Buckeye Career Center, Ray Anderson from Claymont High School, Haylee Myers from Conotton Valley High School, Kensington Fisher from Dover High School, Derek Mackey from Garaway High School, Jessica Robinson from Indian ValleyHigh School, Kody Ames from New Philadelphia High School, John Allen Rose from Newcomerstown High School and Josh Hampton from Tuscarawas Valley High School.
NEW PHILADELPHIA Construction students at Buckeye Career Center are building boxes to hold the flags that cover veterans caskets at their burials.
The project serves two purposes: it gives the juniors the opportunity to serve the community, and it gives veterans survivors a way to display the flags. Many times these flags get shoved in a closet. The flag boxes can cost over $100 and are hard to find, said Debra Cook, director of the Tuscarawas County Veterans Service Office.
All veterans who are honorably discharged are eligible for a flag when they die, Cook said.
The triangular boxes are made from red oak with a clear acrylic front.
