In Bangladesh, the looming shadow of Pakistan ceases to die. Despite 50 years of liberated existence and a decade of phenomenal economic and human development, the ghost of Islamic radicalism refuses to go away.
The religious radicalism encouraged by Pakistani military junta to keep its stranglehold on its eastern wing before 1971 was defeated by resurgent militant Bengalee nationalism but it got a fresh lease of life after the 1975 coup and consolidated its grip with enormous patronage from military rulers, Ziaur Rahman and HM Ershad.

More than 20,000 passengers may have spread the Indian Covid variant after arriving in the UK from India.
Public Health England (PHE) has said almost half of all cases are related to travel or contact with a traveller.
Boris Johnson delayed imposing a travel ban to the country until 23 April when India was added to the UK’s ‘red list’, but this was almost a month after the variant was first detected in the country.
Borders not closed in time
Ministers have been accused of failing to close the UK’s borders in time to stop the variant from entering the country, despite Covid cases spiralling out of control in India in late March.
Top Jamaat-e-Islami leader and listed 1971 war criminal Shahjahan Chowdhury has been arrested by the police for allegedly instigating the violence unleashed by radical outfit Hefazat-e-Islam on March.
