India put on table by EU as backup plan for trade; sidelining China only wishful thinking

When some Indian and European officials hailed the resumption of trade talks and agreement on enhanced partnership to seek replacement of China amid growing opposition toward the China-Europe investment deal, some Chinese observers consider that sidelining China through an EU-India tie-up is wishful thinking that has only a symbolic meaning, as disputes between India and Europe such as prevailing protectionism in India and different attitudes on a US-proposed vaccine waiver plan will hinder talks.
Mahbub Alam, a joint commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said Hifazat has a subgroup called Manhazi.
Members of Manhazi include some people who had “fought in Afghanistan “, according to him.
“They harbour extremist views. Basically it was them who instigated the violence in Chattogram,” said Mahbub.
The police have identified some former members of banned militant outfit Harkat-ul Jihad al-Islami, or HuJI, among the Afghanistan returnee fighters, he said. EU and India agree to resume trade talks at virtual summit
The European Union and India agreed to resume stalled free-trade negotiations and seek closer cooperation to combat climate change at a virtual summit on Saturday, as concerns about China bring Brussels and New Delhi closer.
Partly overshadowed by the COVID-19 crisis in India, the meeting brought together Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and all of the bloc’s 27 leaders for the first time in a sign of the EU’s renewed interest in the Indo-Pacific region.
Past EU-India summits have involved only the Indian prime minister and the EU’s chief executive and chairman.

New Delhi: India on Saturday called on the European Union to support the proposal for the patent waiver on COVID-19 vaccine production, even as the regional bloc continues to push back on the US reversal by flagging that it is not a solution to the immediate demand for vaccines around the world.
