The COVID-19 pandemic has reached a new record high, with the number of daily global infections now averaging more than 820,000, led by a massive outbreak in India. The World Health Organization says the pandemic is still in its acute phase, with a ninth straight week of rising infections. Almost 5.7 million cases were reported last week alone, which the WHO says is certain to be an underestimate. This is WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.Â
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus: “Many countries are still experiencing intense transmission, and the situation in India is beyond heartbreaking.”
On Monday, President Joe Biden spoke by phone with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, promising to send aid, including vaccination supplies, therapeutic drugs and desperately needed oxygen. As Pandemic Surges in India, US Offers Oxygen and Related Supplies
Experts say it should have come sooner
NEW DELHI The United States has decided to support India with oxygen cylinders, oxygen generation systems, oxygen concentrators, ventilators, therapeutics, personal protective equipment, tests, and other related supplies as India struggles with a huge surge in COVID cases. Critics say the help has been slow in coming.
For the past five days, India has set a new world record for a single-day increase in coronavirus cases, with over 300,000 new cases each day and a peak of 352,991 new cases on April 26. There have been over 17 million total cases since the pandemic began.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has said the wave of COVID-19 infections in India is the result of a “perfect storm” of mass gatherings, more contagious variants and low vaccination rates.
India’s new coronavirus cases remained above 300,000 for a sixth consecutive day on Tuesday, while its armed forces have pledged urgent medical aid to help battle the staggering spike in infections overwhelming its hospitals and crematoriums.
The WHO is providing critical equipment and supplies to India, including 4,000 oxygen concentrators, which only require an energy source, WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said.
India’s death toll is now pushing towards 200,000, and hospitals that do not have enough oxygen supplies and beds are turning away coronavirus patients.
Biden has been under pressure from progressive Democrats in Congress as well as health care groups to support the waiver for vaccine patents at the World Trade Organization, which backers say would help lower-income countries have access to the vaccine recipe so that they can increase production.
The White House has for weeks declined to articulate a position, but Psaki provided more detail on Tuesday into the considerations the administration is weighing.
ADVERTISEMENT Our focus is on maximizing production and supply for the world at the lowest possible cost, and there are a lot of different ways to do that, she said.
