Shawnee Tribe may get more COVID relief funds

An appeals court in Washington, D.C., has ruled in favor of the Shawnee Tribe in its effort to get more in coronavirus relief funds. In June, the Shawnee Tribe sued the U.S. Treasury Department for allocating only $100,000 in CARES Act funding. The tribe complained it should have gotten $6 million or more based on its membership. A U.S. district judge in Washington, D.C., dismissed the legal challenge in September. On Tuesday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit overturned the dismissal. The appeals court also ordered the lower court judge to issue a preliminary injunction preventing the Treasury Department from disbursing $12 million in funds to others. Cherokee Nation Elders Move Into New Efficiency Homes Cherokee Nation elders moved into new homes this week thanks to their tribe. The homes are part of the Cherokee Nation s Housing Authority that aims to build efficiency-style homes for low-income elderly members and families. The Indian Housing Block Grant helped fund the houses which are located in Salina, Hulbert and Tahlequah. An added benefit of the houses is that they re spaced out enough so the elderly residents can stay safe from contracting the coronavirus. Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. said although that might not have been the intention of the houses, the added benefit is something he is thankful for.
