Governments around the world condemn Myanmar s military coup

The United States led governments around the world have called for the restoration of Myanmar s democracy on Monday after the military staged a coup, arresting civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other politicians.

The United States will take action against those responsible if these steps are not reversed , White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement.
She added that the US opposes any attempt to alter the outcome of the November elections, which handed Suu Kyi s National League for Democracy (NLD) an overwhelming landslide, but sparked allegations of vote irregularities by the routed military-backed party.

The statement came after the Pakistani Supreme Court earlier this week ordered the release of Sheikh, who was convicted in 2002 of orchestrating the abduction and killing of Wall Street Journals South Asia bureau chief Daniel Pearl. The statement was made ahead of Blinken s phone call to Foreign Minister S Jaishankar.

President Joe Biden’s administration represents a fresh start for the U.S. in foreign affairs. But as experts observed at an online MIT panel on Wednesday, the U.S. cannot just reset foreign policy to the last time Biden worked in the White House, as vice-president in the Obama administration. Too many things have changed, too dramatically, in the last four years.
“You can’t rewind the clock at a time when, frankly, great power rivalry is higher than it ever was,” said Shivshankar Menon, an Indian diplomat who previously served as the country’s national security adviser and as the foreign secretary in India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
