When two Anands sign on a deal, it is bound to be of epic proportions! On February 22, Anand Mahindra, chairman of Mahindra Group, took his Twitter followers by surprise when he announced a first-of-its-kind Global Chess League. In the tweet, he named Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand as his ‘co-conspirator’.

New Delhi, Feb 22 : A franchise-base, first-of-its-kind Global Chess League (GCL), with five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand as its mentor, is to be launched, Tech Mahindra announced on Monday.
Although the company didn t announce the dates of the phygital physical and digital league, the statement said that the GCL would look at the prospect of introducing innovative scoring, board selection methods and a fantasy league to maximise viewer engagement.
The statement also did not say whether the GCL would be launched in conjunction FIDE, the world chess governing body, or the All India Chess Federation or it will be run independently, somewhat like cricket s Indian Premier League.

When she first started participating in chess tournaments at age 7, Koneru Humpy would play in both draws of boys and girls. “They considered girls as ‘underdog players’, so I was allowed to participate, she recalls. “But mostly girls themselves didn’t dare do that because the competition (in the boys’ draw) was very tough.

New Delhi, Feb 15 : The newly-elected All India Chess Federation (AICF) set-up comprises six vice-presidents and six joint secretaries a number that may irk the sports ministry sooner or later vis-ÃÂ -vis the National Sports Development Code 2011, particularly a related case is going on in Delhi High Court.
According to the Code 2011, there can be a maximum of 12 persons in the managing committee of a National Sports Federation (NSF), comprising seven office-bearers and five executive members. The AICF has elected a total of 15 officials.
