Mumbai: Maharashtra government has ordered 18.60 lakh doses of Covid vaccines, which should help boost the vaccination drive, said State Health Minister Rajesh Tope. Tope said the focus was to accelerate the drive by inoculating more people in the 18-44 years age group.
According to data shared by the state health department, 1.65 crore of the total three crore population above 45 years of age had been vaccinated since the mass immunisation programme began, which means almost 45 per cent of the vulnerable population in those age brackets have been covered. Also, one lakh registered beneficiaries in the 18-44 category have been vaccinated since May 1.

Serum Institute of India Chief Executive Officer Adar Poonawalla has said that India’s Covid-19 vaccine shortage would continue through July, reported
The Financial Express. Poonawalla said that the production of the vaccines is expected to increase from 60-70 million doses (6-7 crore) to 100 million (10 crore) by then.
Poonawalla told
The Financial Times that his company has been maligned by politicians and critics over shortages in vaccines. He said that the government, not the Serum Institute, was responsible for policy decisions.
While the Centre launched the third phase of the immunisation drive, covering citizens above 18 years, several states have expressed their inability to conduct the inoculation programme as they do not have sufficient vaccines. Many states are awaiting more stock from drug companies.

Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Monday urged Serum Institute of India Chief Executive Officer Adar Poonawalla to give priority to the state in providing its anti-coronavirus vaccine as the government was ready to purchase doses from the Pune-based company.
He said the Maharashtra government was even ready to purchase Russian COVID-19 vaccine Sputnik V.
Talking to the media here, Tope said since Poonawalla hails from Pune, he should think about Maharashtra and give priority to his home state in allocating Covishield, the anti-coronavirus vaccine manufactured by Serum Institute of India (SII).
