Police pursuit ends in exchange of gunfire
KENDALLVILLE â A traffic stop in Fort Wayne led to a pursuit and ended with gunshots fired between police and a LaOtto man just outside the Johnson Mobile Home Park off Waits Road early Thursday morning.
The suspect, Justin R. Weikel, 40, was transported to an area hospital, according to Indiana State Police Public Information Officer Brian Walker. Weikelâs condition was listed as stable as of 7:55 a.m.
Initial reports indicated Weikel had been shot, but police later said that might not be the case. He was the lone occupant of his vehicle.
No officers or civilians were injured, but an unoccupied DeKalb County Sheriffâs Department vehicle was struck with gunfire.
CROMWELL â The Cromwell Town Council was full steam ahead Tuesday night on the townâs pursuit of a state grant for its waterworks improvement project.
The three-member council authorized council president Jerry Pauley to sign documents for the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs grant application, due June 1, and conducted the first of two public hearings on the project. The second public hearing will be held before June 25.
No members of the public spoke at the hearing. Casey Erwin of DLZ, the townâs engineering firm, reviewed his preliminary engineering report for the project, which totals $3.5 million. An OCRA grant of $600,000 could reduce the townâs cost to $2.9 million.

INDIANA (WFIE) - Lt. Governor Suzanna Crouch, along with the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs, announced that 80 additional Hoosier communities will receive more than $18.6 million in federal grant funding.
That comes from OCRA’s COVID-19 Response Grant Program.
Back in April of 2020, officials say OCRA began addressing the impact of COVID-19 on communities.
Last year, they say 112 grants were awarded to 96 different communities, which totaled more than $20.9 million.
For this round, eligible applicants could apply for up to $250,000.
