SOUTH BEND â Under normal circumstances, the 22 cadets sitting in the auditorium of the South Bend Police Department on Monday would be 150 miles south in Plainfield, Ind., going through training at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.
Instead, due to COVID-19 restrictions and delays at ILEA, cadets from agencies around Michiana are temporarily completing their training in South Bendâs police department using a combination of in-person instruction, Zoom and pre-recorded lectures.
âThis is the first time that we can remember that something like this has happened. Itâs kind of been born out of necessity with the pandemic,â said Jennifer Fults, deputy director of ILEA.

News 8 captured video during last spring’s protest of two protestors being hit by Indianapolis police for curfew violations. One lawmaker said the video was a tipping point for changing use-of-force rules for Indiana police.
State Sen. Greg Taylor, a Democrat from Indianapolis, said Wednesday, “We’ve got problems. We’ve got some serious problems. I mean, if those officers (shown in the video) followed protocol, then we should all be concerned that that’s the protocol. For me, that was the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

INDIANA (WFIE) - Indiana State Police is now accepting applications for the 81st Recruit Academy.
Those who are interested must apply online at
They say online the first 150 submitted applications will be accepted.
According to officials, if you’re selected to proceed in the selection process, you will then complete the written examination, physical abilities test and oral interview all in one day.
Testing will be held from Friday, March 12 to Sunday, March 14 at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in Plainfield, Indiana.
Fear caused by the pandemic, civil unrest and even the election of a new president has created unprecedented demand for guns and ammunition that has some shop owners concerned about their own survival.
When news of the pandemic started to spread, lines started forming at stores here and across the country for guns, ammunition, bulletproof vests and other items deemed important for self-defense and survival.
And civil unrest throughout most of the country only served to fan the flames as well as the election of President Joe Biden, who many fear will seek to constrict 2nd Amendment rights.
âItâs been a perfect storm,â said Rebecca Bartol, owner of gun store Femme Fatale in South Bend. âPeople started panic buying in March and it really hasnât let up since because of rioting, protesting and political changes.â
