Dr Susan Moore s son hopes his mother s legacy brings about a fair health care system | State

Dr. Susan Moore did not set out to be a game changer. All she wanted was to be treated for a severe case of COVID-19 with the same dignity she gave her own patients. But in a searing video that went viral last December, she charged Indiana University Health providers with allowing their racial bias to taint the treatment she received. Six months after her eventual death from COVID-19, IU Health on Wednesday released the findings of an external investigation into a case that thrust the hospital into an unwelcome spotlight. The report concluded that while her medical care did not contribute to her untimely death, Moore suffered from a lack of cultural competence on the part of those treating her at IU Health North in Carmel.

J&J vaccine: Black, Latino Indiana advocates fight vaccine mistrust

For months, leaders in Indianapolis Black, Latino and underserved communities have been fighting an existing history of racism, mistrust and issues of lack of representation and language access around the COVID-19 vaccine.  Community centers, churches, clinics and nonprofits have joined forces to bring the vaccine to Black and Latino neighborhoods. Bilingual volunteers have helped thousands of Spanish-speaking Hoosiers register to get their shot, and multiple virtual informational panels have been hosted to help debunk myths.  On Tuesday, federal health officials said they are recommending a pause in the administration of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine due to six reported cases of a rare blood clot found in women after receiving the one-shot vaccine.

Indiana Black Legislative Caucus Praises Progress Around Call To Action Days

Credit Brandon Smith / IPB News The Indiana Black Legislative Caucus says its “call to action days” – bringing advocates to the Statehouse – are making an impact on the legislature. The increased advocacy came out of an incident earlier this session in which Black lawmakers were booed and heckled by some Republicans after raising concerns about what they saw as discrimination in a piece of legislation. Organizations including the Indiana Muslim Alliance Network, the Indiana Minority Health Coalition, the Indiana Poor People’s Campaign, Faith in Indiana, Hoosier Women Forward and Concerned Clergy of Indianapolis showed up at the Statehouse, as did citizens from around the state. People sent letters and emails and made calls. And IBLC leaders say that advocacy has helped halt some legislation they oppose and push forward bills they support.
