Over the course of the coronavirus pandemic, Indianapolis largest museums have felt like places that offer some semblance of a respite from 2020.
They reopened over the summer when shutdown restrictions lifted, offering their spacious corridors as one of the few opportunities for an indoor cultural experience. People can move around at will, free to exit a gallery if they feel anyone is encroaching. Health experts have ranked a stroll through them as a risk akin to grocery shopping.

Library offers take-and-make felt ornament kit
GREENFIELD/NEW PALESTINE Teens (ages 12 to 18) can pick up a free take-and-make kit to needle-felted holiday decorations. Each kit contains the supplies and instructions necessary to complete the project. A self-taught artist, Joel Washington’s work can be found in Bloomington galleries and restaurants, in departments across Indiana University, and at the Indiana State Museum. In 2018, he travelled to London, England, where eight of his paintings were featured at the Parallax Art Fair.
Many of Washington’s works are colorful paintings of famous jazz and rock musicians, such as Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, and the Beatles.
“Music can put you in a time and place,” he says. “In my head, I know what imagery I could paint if I’m listening to certain music. When I hear something, I sometimes think, ‘I’ve got to buy this! I’ve got to paint!’”
