In the process, it also would diminish democracy in our state, severely decrease judicial independence and increase the political pressure on our state’s appellate judiciary. Indeed, if successful, it would give the legislative branch outsize influence over the Indiana state appellate judges and justices. And there is another, equally profound consequence: It would also further embed systemic racism in Indiana’s constitution.

For the first time ever, African-Americans will simultaneously serve as presidents of the Indiana State Bar Association and the Indianapolis Bar Association.   Normally, the swearing-in for the bar association president is done in person. But due to the pandemic, it s all virtual to add to the historic move. The presidents are vetted by election committees from both associations.
