State Sen. Andy Zay (R-Huntington) has recently introduced two bills, Senate Bill 137 and 139. Senate Bill 137, which would allow the Kids First Trust Fund board to create a new way to raise money, unanimously passed the Senate Committee on Family and Children Services. Senate Bill 137 would allow the Kids First Trust Fund board to create a nonprofit subsidiary corporation to solicit and accept private funding, gifts and donations. This would create another revenue source to for child services offered by the partners of the trust fund and the Department of Child Services. The Kids First Trust Fund is currently funded with sales of the special Kids First license plate through the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

A state senator wants to make sure Hoosiers know the proper procedures in a traffic stop. Lonnie Randolph says he has seen examples of what can happen after getting pulled over by law enforcement. “The immediate thought is it’s routine, but what happens is it gets out of hand,” said the Democrat from East Chicago. “Somebody gets injured, hurt and, in some cases, killed. A lot of times, the majority of it more recently has been affecting African Americans.”
