Indiana s budgeted forecast shows rebounding economy | Local

Indiana s budgeted forecast shows rebounding economy NIKI KELLY | The Journal Gazette INDIANAPOLIS – Fiscal leaders got a pleasant surprise Thursday - $2 billion in new tax revenue for the biennial state budget under consideration. The updated forecast shows the economy rebounding, which means lawmakers have more money to spend than was predicted in December. House Ways and Means Chairman Tim Brown, R-Crawfordsville, says he has never seen such a substantial change in projected tax receipts this late in the budget-writing process. Legislators plan to finish their work next week. “It is unique and amazing and exciting,” he said, noting he is getting a lot of phone calls, text messages and emails with ideas how to spend the cash.

“I’ll see you in heaven.” It was the last thing Al Braccolino, 90, of Crown Point, told one of his daughters as paramedics loaded him into an ambulance Nov. 16. COVID-19 forced him into the final fight of his life. Ten days later, the chair Al usually occupied at the Thanksgiving table would sit empty. The husband to his wife of 70 years, father of three and grandfather of six died on the holiday. Al’s daughter, Sandra Noe, was herself suffering from COVID-19, which she contracted while caring for her sick parents, when the virus forced Al’s hospitalization. Noe, 66, is no stranger to helping elderly shut-ins weather isolation.

Indiana General Assembly: Teachers apply pressure for pay hike

The revelation that state lawmakers have nearly $2 billion more to spend in the next two-year budget cycle than originally expected was quickly followed by many suggestions on how that money should be spent: infrastructure, trails, public broadcasting, preschool and more.   No calls, though, are probably louder than those coming from the state’s public education sector. With the eye-popping influx of cash fueled by a faster than expected economic recovery, pressure is mounting on lawmakers to funnel more dollars into the state’s K-12 schools and make good on recommendations from a state commission to increase teacher pay. The Indiana State Teachers Association called on lawmakers to make good on promises to address lagging teacher pay. A report commissioned by Gov. Eric Holcomb estimated it would cost around $600 million to catch Indiana up to neighboring states and make compensation competitive.
