Puducherry records one death and 20 new COVID-19 cases

The Union Territory on Saturday registered one COVID-19 death and 20 new cases. An 87-year-old-person with co-morbidity died at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer), taking the toll due to the virus to 668. Of the new admissions, nine each were from the Puducherry and Karaikal regions while the remaining two were from Yanam. The new cases were detected from 1,414 tests conducted in all the four regions. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, 6,27,975 people were tested for the virus, according to data released by the Health Department on Saturday. As of now, there are 30 patients at Jipmer and 50 at the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Research Institute. There are 21 patients at government hospitals in the three other regions. Another 96 virus infected persons are under home isolation, the data said.

A trained nurse administered the first dose of the vaccine to Munusamy, a healthcare worker, in the presence of Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy. Resident Medical Officer Murali got the next shot.

The Union Territory recorded one death and 45 new cases The second sero-survey conducted by the Health Department has found that around 21.7% of people residing in Mahe region have been exposed to the novel coronavirus till November 30. The survey results were out two-days ago. The latest survey shows the number of people infected has increased by around 16% in one month as the first sero-survey conducted in September showed that 5.6% of the population have tested positive for antibodies, a Health Department official told The Hindu. As on November 30, one in five people was infected by the virus. For the second survey, the Department collected blood samples of 230 persons for SARS-CoV-2 virus antibodies. Of the total persons surveyed, 138 were men and 92 were women.
