International IDEA participated at the webinar
The webinar discussed the impact of COVID-19 pandemic and the measures taken in Asia to democracy, peace and security in the region. While pandemic still raging, many countries are also facing challenges of local politics, and security issues. Political leadership is challenged to manage not only pandemic but also other persistent and ongoing issues, such as internal conflicts and human security challenges. Longer term concerns over economic slowdown are shadowing decision making. The Webinar focused on Indonesian experience in the regional context.
In reference to Global COVID-19 Monitoring Tool of Democracy and Human Rights, Leena Rikkilä Tamang mentioned that, on positive side, Indonesia has deployed significant welfare programmes for its citizens and openly reported the data about the pandemic. In the last few years, the relationship between Indonesia and China has grown significantly in various fields. It has even been argued that Jakarta has become increasingly dependent on Beijing, both economically and politically.
However, what is less often reported is that the growing China-Indonesia ties have coincided with the closer relationship between Indonesia and Taiwan. Until today, relations between China and Taiwan are complex and tense: the former claims the latter to be a breakaway province which it has vowed to retake, by force if necessary, while the latter says it is clearly much more than a province, arguing that it is a sovereign state. Taiwan’s close ties with the United States also complicates the issue. This, of course, creates a dilemma for many countries that have relations of one kind or another with both China and Taiwan.

The Orchid Park at the Bogor Botanical Garden will certainly add to the existing facilities properly. It is also expected to increase the plant collection as part of our rich biodiversity Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, or PUPR, completed renovation of the Bogor Botanical Garden s Orchid Park to support conservation and preservation of orchid plant species outside their natural habitat, or ex situ. The Covid-19 health crisis has prompted thousands of people to turn to antiseptics and disinfectants for added protection, as these products are effective at killing microorganisms and thereby contribute to minimising the virus’ spread.
Although antiseptics and disinfectants may seem similar, they actually have different applications: The former is for applying to the body, while the latter is for inanimate surfaces and objects.
