The Last Tour: Inner City Heritage Stories documentary provides an insight into old buildings in Invercargill, stretching back to the 1800s.
A documentary on the old buildings in the Invercargill CBD rebuild zone, before they were demolished, will be screened as part of Southland Heritage Month. The documentary, titled
The Last Tour: Inner City Heritage Stories, will be shown at the Heritage-listed Embassy Theatre in Invercargill on March 18. It was to have been screened on March 4 but because of Southland moving to Covid-19 Alert Level 2 it had to be postponed. March is the province’s heritage month.
Sixty per cent of the large precast concrete wall panels in the Farmers build are erected and in the next fortnight, concrete will be poured into part of its first floor slab. Nine of the 89 concrete columns for the car park are in place, while 40 per cent of its foundations are finished. “We’re relying very much on the delivery of steel work and the precast, that’s the key to the continuing progress . and obviously getting the foundations in,” Cotton said. ”When they connect these new buildings to the old facades, we can get rid of the steel [supports] on Esk St.”

New Zealand’s favourite shopping destination just got bigger and better with the $277-million expansion of Auckland’s Sylvia Park designed by reputed architecture studio Buchan opening in October 2020.
Buchan’s signature architectural work in the retail and hospitality space is evident at the 20,000-square-metre Level One development called Galleria. Featuring a carefully curated selection of 57 stores, the new addition not only increases the total retail space to 106,427 square metres but also makes Sylvia Park the biggest mall in the country.
Sylvia Park’s expansion follows the launch of New Zealand’s first H&M and Zara stores in 2016, both of which were delivered by Buchan.
Building a 6000sqm multi-storey space in the area beside and behind the Tuatara Backpackers Lodge on Dee St for a new museum would cost just $36m, he said. His proposal was ideal because the council already owned most of lower-Esk St and it would tie in to the Invercargill Central development bordering Esk and Tay streets, Harpur said.

The Southland Museum and Art Gallery pyramid building in Queens Park, Invercargill, has been closed since April, 2018. “[The old buildings on Tay St] are going to have to be . probably demolished anyway, so it’s an opportunity to latch onto the existing development as well as get rid of some potential hazards that are sitting there now.
