The Minnesota city of Brooklyn Center is considering a resolution to reform policing nearly a month after the fatal officer-involved shooting of 20-year-old Daunte Wright that would send unarmed civilians to respond to minor traffic violations and mental health calls.
Mayor Mike Elliott, whose office assumed control over the police force after the firing of City Manager Curt Boganey, presented the resolution to City Council on Saturday that would also create multiple new public safety and crime prevention departments and committees, Fox 9 Minneapolis reported. The good news is we have the ability to start creating these changes now, today, Elliott said at the meeting. This resolution will transform our system so that police are not the only available response for everything.

Friday, the Minnesota division of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN) joined community organizers in requesting Washington County Attorney Pete Orput step down and Gov. Tim Walz select a special prosecutor to handle the case of a former officer charged in connection with the death of 20-year-old Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center.
CAIR-MN along with Communities United Against Police Brutality, Racial Justice Network, Twin Cities Coalition for Justice for Jamal, Minnesota Justice Coalition, and others are pushing for elevated charges against former Brooklyn Center officer Kim Potter, who has been charged with second-degree manslaughter.
Thursday, KSTP s Callan Gray reported a group gathered outside of Orput’s house to push for murder charges.
