SALT LAKE CITY – A recent youth retreat organized by the Corazon de Maria prayer group at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish gave young people age 15 and older four days over two weekends to focus on God.
“The retreat was most needed,” said Jose Fernandez, coordinator of the retreat, referring to the fact that due to the restrictions imposed by the COVID -19 pandemic, in-person gatherings were banned for almost a year.

One of the seven broken signposts that A.T. Wright studies in his new book Broken Signposts: How Christianity Makes Sense of the World (New York: HarperOne, 2020, $27.99) is spirituality. It is one of the seven signposts that Wright doesn’t think are working in the contemporary world and which he thinks can be healed by embracing the vision that St. John presents in his gospel. I smiled as I read the first couple of sentences in Wright’s chapter on spirituality.

I didn’t mean to get involved. I was there as a photographer, and to do the job properly I need to be an observer, not a participant. I need to concentrate on the best angle and ensuring that the focus is sharp, without being distracted by the event I’m documenting.
But Saturday at the May crowning at St. Florence Mission in Huntsville my professional objectivity went out the window. The event started with Mass, at which I actually did participate, listening to the homily, trying to feel in full communion with my fellow worshipers, praying that I would be open to the Spirit moving in my life. That, I suspect, was my mistake, because God took up my invitation.
